If you are a licensed engineer in Montana, you are required to use a Montana engineering seal embosser. You must ensure that your seal meets the state requirements in size, appearance, and usage to maintain compliance with all rules and regulations. Here you will find out more about the seal and how it must be used.
Montana Engineer Seal Requirements
There are different requirements required for engineering seals in each state. The Montana State Board has several rules for proper appearance and use. Each licensed engineer is required to use an appropriate Montana engineering seal. This seal or stamp can be 1-5/8” or 2” in diameter. Generally, the 1-5/8” seal is referred to as a pocket seal, while the 2” is designated as a desk seal. While the Montana engineering seal embosser is the most popular option, engineers can also use rubber stamps or digital facsimiles, providing each is identical to the embosser. Unlike many other states, Montana does allow the use of facsimiles of the seal that are reduced to half the size of the original.
Engineer Seal Appearance for the Montana State Board
There are requirements as to how the Montana engineering seal embosser must appear to meet the proper rules and regulations. The seal consists of two circles, one within the other. Inside the circle, the seal must include the engineer’s name, his or her license number preceded by “No.” and followed by “PE” and the word “Licensed”. Within the two circles, the word “Montana” appears at the top, while “Professional Engineer” is located at the bottom. These three words are located in the space made between the concentric circles. The Montana engineering seal embosser may also include the words “Land Surveyor” where applicable, which will also require the prefix after the number to be “ES”.
Sealing Printed Drawings and Engineering Documents
Montana requires that the Montana engineering seal embosser be used on all reports, plans, drawings, specifications, and other documents to show that the engineer either created them or directly supervised the creation of them. Engineers who did not work on the documents, or who were not involved with creating them are not authorized to affix their seals. The Montana engineering seal embosser will only be issued to those who have received a certificate of registration for professional engineering or engineering and land surveying. Engineers who use a Montana engineering seal embosser are certifying that they worked on the plat, drawings, or other documents and that they were in responsible charge of the documents. Each time the seal is used, it must also be accompanied by both a signature and the date for it to be considered valid. There are several requirements and rules for using a Montana engineering seal embosser properly. Engineers should visit the Montana Board of Professional Engineers and Professional Land Surveyors website for all rules, requirements, and other information that is required of them in the state of Montana.
